Austin GDC & Slides

So it’s been a while since we’ve posted to the blog, but that’s mostly because Jeff and I spent the last week at the Austin Game Developers Conference.
The number one thing that struck me about the conference was that of the roughly 75 sessions given, at least five were about metrics. Joe Ludwig of Flying Labs gave a talk about their in-house metrics system, known as the FLogger. You can get his slides here. Scott Rigby spoke about intrinsic need satisfaction unfortunately I wasn’t able to make that one, but the talk was about the objective measurement of player satisfaction. Janus Anderson and Dallas Snell had a great talk which I was able to catch about how NCSoft does their internal metrics. Their entire discussion was almost like a retelling of my experience doing metrics at Turbine!
On Thursday I gave a talk on metrics, titled Gameplay Metrics For a Better Tomorrow. People asked me for the slides, so here they are. Note that the entire text of the presentation is contained within the notes for the slides, so it’s almost as good as being there. And cheaper.
I said five talks, and I guess I just listed four. However, there were at least two other talks that mentioned metrics as necessary in the development of games, including Austin Grossman’s talk about game writing and also Raph’s talk. So I’m counting those as one. There you have it. 2007 is the year of metrics at AGDC. At least from my warped perspective!
